Probably if the dog pulls a lot on his walks, generating a lot of tension, you can think that the best option is to get a harness to solve the problem, and in some cases you may be right.

But it is important to analyze the pros and cons when deciding whether to wear a collar or a harness.

Dog Collars

Dog collars are the usual solution when walking a dog. They come in a wide variety of styles, some are intentionally designed to constrain or cause discomfort when a dog pulls as a training medium, but we do not recommend them.

A traditional dog collar that is not constrained is fine for animals that have no breathing problems and are not likely to pull the leashes. They can also be more comfortable for some dogs, especially if you plan to leave it on all the time.

. A harness is usually not so comfortable to wear all day Also, if your dog has long hair, it could get stuck in a harness. A dog collar doesn’t have that problem.

However, for pets that pull a lot during walks, a collar may increase the risk of neck injuries. A harness may be the best option in such cases.

There are also non-slip collars designed for puppies that are prone to slipping from traditional collars.

The thickness of the collar is also a factor to consider, a 2cm wide collar is ideal for dogs from small breeds to medium and large breeds, but perhaps for giant breeds, or large dogs, it is more recommended an option of 2.5cm.

However, we recommend always seek advice or consult to determine the best option for your pet and you, do not forget to take into account the materials, as a collar made with the appropriate materials will be softer and more portable for your pet, which will thank you infinitely.

Dog Harness

Harnesses are becoming increasingly popular as dog parents discover the advantages they can offer. They are excellent training tools for puppies who are learning to behave on the leash, and allow the walkers to have a little more control.

Dog harnesses discourage jerking and allow you to prevent your dog from jumping on strangers without worrying about choking. Dogs with harnesses are also less likely to be tangled on the leash accidentally.

Another advantage is that they also cause less restriction for breeds such as French Pugs and Bulldogs that are prone to breathing problems or tracheal collapse.

If your puppy has any trouble breathing, a harness is probably the best option. The dog harness can be front or rear fixing, and you have some that allow both options which are what we recommend.

If you have a strong or very large dog, a harness gives you much better control and is also easier for your arms and back, however, we recommend teaching from puppies to walk our pets to avoid having to deal with constant jerks on walks.

In addition, they are a good solution for Houdini exhaust, because in short-haired or very slippery dogs, it prevents them from being able to remove it easily.

So far some of the main advantages of harnesses, now let’s look at some points to consider

Poorly adjusted harnesses can cause problems for various reasons. Harnesses that do not fit properly can cause discomfort if they are too tight or cause rubbing if they are loose and do not fit the dog properly. When the harnesses do not fit properly, dogs can maneuver outside their harness, causing an increased risk of the dog running or suffering an accident.

On the other hand, if we do not apply a correct positive reinforcement to our furry friends, we may have the problem of not learning to walk next to us, the correct type of harness for your dog is the harness that helps train your dog and enforce good habits, avoiding damage and allowing good control to the owner.

The material from which they are made, many harnesses are made with dubious quality materials, which makes us apply to our pet’s coat, products that do not guarantee their safety, we recommend always pay attention and opt for solutions that provide a certification or pay attention to their materials, Breathable materials, comfortable and soft

If in doubt, ask your veterinarian. If you think your harness may be causing problems or does not fit properly, consult a professional to make sure the harness fits correctly.
