If you like dogs, but have an allergy to them, you probably thought about having a “hypoallergenic” dog. According to history, these are breeds that cause less sneezing, itching in the eyes or tearing, among other allergy symptoms.

The reality is that hypoallergenic dogs do not exist and no one seems to know how this rumor began, as researchers have not yet discovered scientific evidence to prove such a hypothesis.

A 2011 study published in The American Journal of Rhinology and Allergy concluded that the number of allergens found in households with dogs does not vary by breed. That is, people living with so-called “hypoallergenic” dogs have the same level of allergens in their homes as people with pets that are not hypoallergenic.

Researchers measured the most common allergen level, Canis familiaris 1, or Can f 1, which is found in the homes of 173 families with dogs. Of the 173 samples, only 10 had less quantifiable amounts of Can f 1. No matter what kind of dog was at home, there was no significant difference in the level of allergens measured.

The investigators concluded the following:

“There was no evidence of the elimination of allergens by dogs considered hypoallergenic. Doctors should report that people can not rely on breeds considered to be “hypoallergenic” to disperse fewer allergens in the environment. Further research is needed on the specific factors of the dog and whether there are really hypoallergenic breeds.”

Breeds that cause less allergies

According to the AKC

“Although no dog is 100% hypoallergenic, it is possible to find breeds of dogs that are better for people with allergies. These dogs have a coat that produces less dandruff. Dandruff, which adheres to the hair of pets, is the cause of most allergies in people. There are no hypoallergenic dogs, however these breeds can make your life more comfortable if you suffer from allergies.”

The following are the best breeds of dogs for people suffering from allergies, according to AKC:

Afghan Hound

Bichon frise

portuguese water dog

Schnauzer (All Sizes)

Lagotto romagnolo

Bedlington terrier

Tulear Coton

Spanish Water Dog

American hairless terrier

Chinese Crested

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier

Peruvian hairless dog

Kerry blue terrier

Why these breeds can still make you sneeze

That is, it’s not just about a dog’s coat, since its hair itself is not an allergen. The factors that trigger an allergic response are proteins in the urine, saliva and dandruff (dead skin cells) of the dog. Their coat can accumulate dandruff and other allergens such as pollen, but even hairless dogs can release allergens in your home.

The immune system of people with dog allergies reacts to harmless proteins, which causes a hypersensitivity response that may include itching in the eyes, sneezing, rashes, swelling, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

Castration Can Help Lower Allergies | Some People Only Have Allergies to Male Dogs

“Up to 30% of people who have allergies to dogs have allergies to a specific protein that occurs in a dog’s prostate. If you suffer from an allergy to such protein in male dogs, the best option would be to have a female or a sterile dog.”

In intact males, the protein Can f 5 (Canis familiaris 5) is produced in the prostate. When these dogs urinate, the protein can spread from the skin and coat to any part of the body. These proteins are very light and once they are in the air, they can stay suspended for long periods and fall on furniture, carpets, mattresses and clothes.

If you suspect or know that you or a member of your family has dog allergies or allergies in general and you don’t have a dog yet, it would be a good option to adopt a female or a male neutered.

Fortunately, in my experience, most people who have allergies to furry companions find ways to treat allergy that do not involve giving up or not having an animal. For most animal lovers, the benefits of sharing life with a pet seem to outweigh the hassle of mild allergies. If you are hesitant to have a pet or not, why don’t you consider taking care of a dog temporarily first?, transit will give you and an animal a beautiful experience.

10 Ways to Minimize Allergens by Pets in the Home

  1. Consider turning your room (or your family’s room with allergies) into a pet-free area. This means that your dog should not enter the room for any reason.
  2. To prevent allergens build-up within your home, you could replace carpets with hard floors, curtains and blinds with non-fabric window covers, as well as avoid fabric covered furniture (upholstered).
  3. Clean your home often and thoroughly, including surfaces that trap pet hair and dandruff (sofa covers, pillows, bedding, etc.)
  4. Wash the sheets of both with hot water and regularly.
  5. Bathe your dog frequently using pet safe organic shampoos
  6. If you move your pet in the car, consider using washable seat covers. Like the Travel Mats.
  7. Let children have fun. Let your kids play outside and get dirty. Research on the hygiene hypothesis, which is the theory that humans may be too clean for their own good and underestimate their immune systems to common microbes in the environment, has provided convincing evidence that children who are exposed to pets before their immune systems develop completely, at about two years, are less likely to develop allergies than children without pets.
  8. Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation throughout the body. One of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids is krill oil. Consider consuming supplements with krill oil and coconut oil. Coconut oil contains lauric acid, which helps reduce yeast production, and together they can help moderate or suppress the inflammatory response.
  9. Provide fresh, anti-inflammatory foods (without grains), nutritionally specific to your pet’s species. Reducing or avoiding allergenic and transgenic foods in your dog’s feeding can help reduce the production of allergenic saliva.
  10. Make sure you meet your pet’s essential fatty acid requirements. By making sure you get optimal levels of omega-3 fatty acids in your diet, you can drastically reduce peeling and dandruff.

Reducing the amount of allergens in your home and minimizing allergic reactions to your pets will help all family members live better.

Those are all the recommendations so that you can spend an excellent day with your dog and reduce sneezing to the minimum indispensable.
